Fishing Port Facilities (Artist's Impression)

What is this project about?

The project aims at increasing the dry-standing facilities and introduces new crainage facilities in an area termed as ‘Kavallerizza Ponta tal-Qrejten’ in Marsaxlokk. Marsaxlokk is the major base port for 70% of the Maltese fishing fleet. The project envisages the improvement of servicing facilities to fishing vessels. These will include the supply of fuel, ice and water, repairs and maintenance, loading, handling, grading and transport of fishing products and septic tanks unloading facilities. The modernisation of the existing port facilities, will result in less harmful wastage. Therefore, there will be less dumping, and an improvement in sanitary and environmental conditions.

Who will benefit?

This measure is directed towards fishing vessels owners of all categories.  It is a project aimed at the common benefit of the fishing community whereby both full time and part time fishermen are concerned.

How much is being allocated to the project?

€2,005,993

How is the project progressing?

Following the green light issued by MEPA to the boat hardstand area with the approval of a full development permit in March, works on this project are to follow suit soon.

The works contract, which will consist of reclaiming 3500 square metres of seabed between two existing slipways and the surfacing of the reclaimed area and the adjacent coastline for the creation of 6950 sm of hardstand area, is currently being finalized and is expected to be awarded by end of month.

Just last month, contract relating to the procurement of two boat lifting hoists has been awarded, the delivery of the 250 ton and 50 ton boat hoist is expected by early next year.

Boat trawlers, vessels and fishing equipment were asked to be removed in order to clear the area both on land and at sea in order for preparatory work to be initiated.
